Records (main ones)	• At the time of his retirement, Brendon McCullum held the record of being the highest run scorer in the T20 format. With 2,140 runs in his bag, McCullum was around 500 runs ahead of his counterpart Martin Guptill, who held the 2nd spot on the highest run scorer list. • In addition, at that time, he had the most number of fifties, centuries, sixes and fours in the shortest format of the game. • In February 2014, McCullum became the first Kiwi to score a triple ton (302 off 559 deliveries) in test cricket, achieving the feat against a balanced team like India. • McCullum came in the record books again when he broke his own “fastest 50 in World Cup” record. At the 2015 World Cup, McCullum smashed 50 in just 18 balls, breaking his own 20-ball-50 record that he had created against Canada at the 2007 World Cup. • In his farewell test match, McCullum scored an unbelievable century off just 54 deliveries against Australia, thus breaking the 30-year-old record of fastest test century held by Sir Vivian Richards. • McCullum finished off his test career with a mammoth tally of 107 sixes. Controversies	• Back in 2006, McCulum had to bear the ire of cricket fans, when he dismissed Muttiah Muralitharan in a fashion that is considered to be against the spirit of the game. During the second innings of the first Test between New Zealand and Sri Lanka at Christchurch, Sri Lanka were 9 down with Sangakkara still at the crease at 99*. Just as he completed a single and waved his bat, little did he know what was going to happen next. Muralitharan, who came to the striker’s end, after completing the run went back to congratulate his partner on his century. However, just as he turned to do so, McCullum gathered the ball, took off the bails and made a run-out appeal to the umpire, who gave it out. Ten years later, in 2016, McCullum made a brave gesture and apologized for his mistake, at the MCC Spirit of Cricket Cowdrey Lecture at Lord’s. He said, “Nearly ten years after running out Murali, I view things very differently and I would hope that I am a very different person. Kumar Sangakkara is here tonight. Sanga, I admire you enormously. I regard you as a friend. And I take this opportunity to apologize to you and Murali for my actions on that day. I want to share with you the things that I think were the primary catalysts for my change of approach. And I think it’s fair to say that they came late in my career.” • It is believed that McCullum was the man behind Ross Taylor’s sudden sacking as the captain of the team. In his book titled ‘Declared’, McCullum has revealed that Ross Taylor did not communicate well with the team and was perhaps not deserving of such a post. However, he denied any role in Taylor’s sacking. • In late 2014, the entire cricket fraternity was stunned when the then New Zealand skipper Brendon McCullum told the ICC Anti-corruption bureau that his former team mate, Chris Cairns, approached him thrice with ‘spot-fixing’ offers prior the IPL’s inaugural season in 2008. McCullum added that Cairns offered him a price as high as $180,000 per spot-fix. However, after months of testimonies and trials, Cairns was found “not guilty.”
